Sustainability is a vision that is exploding across the United States. Scholars, advocates, and policy makers, who have often discussed sustainability in ecological terms, increasingly categorize sustainability strategies in three dimensions—environmental integrity, economic development, and social equity, or what has become known as the “Three Es” of sustainable development. This TEDA symposium will examine steps being taken to address sustainability challenges in Houston, the nation’s fourth largest city and sixth largest metropolitan area.

A panel of local experts from the private, public, and nonprofit sectors will outline their environmental, economic, and social equity agendas and spotlight sustainability successes and impediments. We will debate issues such as:

• Are the Three Es inextricably linked, as many proponents of sustainable development claim?
• What are the economic arguments for sustainability goals?
• How do we measure Houston’s sustainability progress across public, private, and nonprofit programs?
